IMPORTANT--Change to Instructional Time--Daily Schedule

September 24, 2020

Hello North Park HS Families,

The opening of the 2020-2021 school year has had some challenges for all of us.  I would like to thank our NPHS students, parents, and guardians for their perseverance through the first six weeks of the school year.  The good news is the NPHS Learning Community seems to have met the challenges successfully, our students are attending their online classes.  We appreciate the time and effort spent by our teachers and staff to provide a quality learning experience for our community.  We appreciate our families supporting their children’s learning while still balancing the demands of work and home life.

The NPHS instructional team has been monitoring the elements of distance learning, gathering feedback from stakeholders, and reviewing the efficiency of meeting our students’ needs.  One area of review has been the structure of the school day and the instructional time online live with teachers.

Here is an update on the status of the schedules:

  • In the current NPHS Schedule, the virtual school day ends at 2:45 p.m. and incorporates 385 daily instructional minutes.
  • Since this amount exceeds the State requirement of 240 minutes daily, the administration has decided to make alterations to the NPHS Schedule so that the virtual school day ends by 2:00 p.m.
  • The revised schedule has 60-minute synchronous class periods, instead of 65-minute periods.  This change altered the start time for every period of the day.
  • The attached copy of the NPHS Schedule indicates changes with yellow highlighting.
  • The revised NPHS Schedule will go into effect on Tuesday, September 29, 2020.
  • We hope that the revisions to the NPHS Schedule will help make the virtual school day flow more smoothly.

I want to assure you that NPHS will continue to monitor and evaluate our instructional practices and consider adjustments as needed.  We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to address learning challenges under these unique circumstances.  We look forward to the day when we can return to the NPHS campus and offer in-person instruction.  In the meantime, we are committed to ensuring that each of our students are connected, learning, and supported in the virtual setting.

Sincerely,

Anthony Ippolito

Principal of NPHS

**Asynchronous sessions are windows of time during which students can complete independent work assigned by the teachers.  On Wednesdays, NPHS students will receive approximately 60-90 minutes of asynchronous learning per period, for a total of 225 minutes.  On Wednesdays, NPHS students will receive approximately 30 minutes per period of assignments and 90 minutes of other asynchronous work such as reading, intervention, etc., for a total of 180 minutes.  These assignments can be completed later in the day as convenient for students and parents, as long as the student meets each teacher’s specific deadlines for submission.
